It’s all fun and games until someone pees on the floor. Don’t get mad – just get the right products and you’ll be best friends with Mr. Puddles again in no time. Here’s how to get rid of pet urine smell from a wood floor quickly and safely – along with proven pro tips. Even get rid of old pet pee smells… completely!
Why it’s important to use the right product
Not all odor removers are made equal. In fact, most aren’t actually odor removers at all; they simply mask the odor, such as deodorizers. These products work for a while but eventually, the pee smell will return. And more often than not, these products end up simply creating an unpleasant mix of odors that actually makes the situation worse.
At Purodora, we have been developing odor neutralizing technology for several years. Our odor neutralizing products eliminate even the most stubborn odors (including products that eliminate skunk smell).
Purodora odor neutralizers get rid of odors completely, quickly and permanently – even if the odor has been around for months or years. As soon as the product comes into contact with the source of the odor, it molecularly binds to it to neutralize the odor.

How to remove the smell of cat or dog urine from wood floors
Getting rid of pee smell from wood floors is actually surprisingly easy when you have the right odor removal product. Depending on the number of spots you need to treat and how embedded the urine is, it should only take a few minutes. A second treatment is sometimes needed for deeply soaked-in urine or very old urine smells.
Pro Tip
Save time - clean only where needed
With Purodora products, you don’t have to clean the entire floor. Just use your nose to locate the source of the urine odors. Common spots for pets to pee are near patio doors, on windowsills, near heaters, in the bathroom or laundry room.
How to clean up fresh pet urine from wood floors
Just caught your dog or cat peeing on your wood floor? The key is to act quickly. Quickly wipe up the urine with a paper towel and then clean the area with Purodora Disinfectant and Animal Odor Neutralizer to eliminate all traces of urine odor.
“For some reason, my dog started repeatedly urinating on the same spot on my hardwood floor. Then I came across information on the web about Purodora Disinfectant and Animal Odor Neutralizer. Well, it works! My floor no longer smells like urine and my dog hasn’t gone back to urinate on that spot again since. Thank you!” – Nicole Roy

How to clean up pet urine that has penetrated into a wood floor
Even if you act quickly, the urine may still seep between the floorboards and underneath. To prevent the urine smell from returning, you’ll need an alcohol-based urine odor remover to treat the area without damaging the wood boards (water-based products take longer to dry and can cause wood to warp).
Pro Tip
How to stop pets from peeing over and over again on the same spot
Pet urine contains pheromones that can incite your dog or cat (or another pet) to relieve itself on that same spot. Even if you can’t smell the urine odor, animals certainly can. That’s why it’s important to eliminate the urine odor completely. Otherwise, it could quickly become a favorite “go” site for your pets.

Pro Tip
What to do if Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer leaves a dark ring on fabrics
Alcohol-based products like Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer can leave a dark ring on some colored fabrics where the dye has not set properly. No need to worry! Simply rub the fabric with a damp cloth and the stain will disappear immediately.
Pro Tip
The key is to clean between and under the wood planks
Urine doesn’t really seep into the varnished planks of wood or floating wood flooring. Rather, it seeps under the planks through the cracks between the boards. You need to get the odor neutralizer in through these cracks to get at the urine which is causing that pungent urine smell.
How to eliminate embedded urine odor on wood floors
Use a narrow spout squeeze bottle to get the product in between the cracks of the floor with more precision.
Then simply wipe off any excess product on the surface of the floor with a damp cloth. Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer will instantly neutralize the urine odor on contact and then quickly evaporate to leave the space between and under your wood floors dry. No need for multiple treatments; just one treatment does the trick.
- If the urine odor is coming from a baseboard trim, use a pour spout bottle to get the product in between the floor and the baseboard.
- If the space between the wood boards is too tight, use a syringe and needle to inject the product. As strange as this may sound, it works like a charm. You can also use this approach to get at urine smells that have seeped into mattresses, car seats and upholstered furniture. Try it – you’ll be amazed!).
- If after a few days you still can detect a urine odor, it means the product wasn’t able to reach all of the urine the first time around. Simply retreat the area with Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer.
Which urine odor destroyer is best to use and when
If the pee has just happened and you act quickly, then the water-based Purodora Disinfectant and Animal Odor Neutralizer will do the trick.
But if you’re dealing with pee that has been on a wood or laminate wood floor for some time, then it probably has infiltrated between the floorboards. In this case, you’ll need to get the product in between and under the boards. You’ll want to use an alcohol-based product here like Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer instead of a water-based product, which can cause the boards to swell.
Both products destroy pee smells as soon as they come into contact with the urine, but because Purodora Urine Odor Neutralizer is alcohol-based, it will quickly evaporate to leave the space under floors dry. No risk of swelling or warping.
