Water damage in home: 3 things to do first
A flood or water damage in a home can be panic-inducing for anyone. Knowing what to do and acting quickly are key. Obviously, you first need to stop the source of the flood or water damage. Then you need to dry everything out and repair the damage. Here are some expert tips to keep in mind if you decide to do this work yourself so that you don’t inadvertently expose your home to mold growth and permanent dank or musty smells. Remove all traces of water and dry affected areas According to the disaster restoration specialists at Steamatic, here are the first steps to take in the event of a flood or water damage in a home: Disconnect the powerMove furniture and electrical appliances to a safe, dry space.Quickly sop up the water from the floor with old towels and a bucket. (If the sewers in your neighborhood aren’t blocked, you can pour the water down the drain. Otherwise, dump it on your lawn or any other permeable surface. Some vacuums can also pick up water.)Dry the affected areas completely. (Using fans and dehumidifiers will help speed up the process.) Note that wet drywall is a great medium for mold growth, so affected areas will probably need to cut away. For baseboard trim, Steamatic recommends taking a quick look: “If you have baseboard trim, take it up first, and if it’s made from pressboard it will likely not be salvageable. If it was wood, you might be able to save it.” These above steps should be done as soon as possible. Next, you need fully prevent mold growth. This step is not to be taken lightly. Otherwise, you may end up with poor air quality in your home, exposing you and your family to potential health problems such as asthma, respiratory problems, etc. Disinfect and prevent mold growth Once surface are dry, spray them with a good disinfectant to destroy any bacteria that may have come up through sewage and toilets. Be sure to treat any and all areas that may have been exposed to water. The disinfectant will eliminate the spore roots and prevent mold from growing.Always disinfect surfaces thoroughly and allow them to dry overnight. Eliminating musty smells from water-damaged surfaces Before closing up the walls or laying a new floor covering, make sure you get rid of all traces of musty smells first. Otherwise, the musty odor will remain and seep through your new walls and floors. To get rid of damp or humid smells, use a product specifically designed for this purpose, such as Damp Odor Neutralizer. For surfaces such as concrete, plywood, rough wood, walls, etc.: Dilute ½ cup (120 ml) of Damp Odor Neutralizer in 1 gallon (4 liters) of water.Use a spray bottle or cloth to apply diluted neutralizer directly to affected surface.Allow surface to air dry. Damp Odor Neutralizer can also be used with a carpet cleaner to remove musty smells from carpets. Did you know?Odor molecules are volatile, which means they also end up in the air. To eliminate the musty smell in your home completely, you’ll also need to treat the ambient air. If you have an air conditioning or air exchange system: Spray the filters with the diluted Damp Odor Neutralizer.Reinstall the still-wet filters and run the system for an hour or so to distribute the odor neutralizer throughout the air ducts and the ambient air. If you don’t have an air conditioning or air exchange system: Spray the diluted Damp Odor Neutralizer onto a clean cloth.Hang the damp cloth over a standing fan.Run the fan for one hour in the affected room.Respray the cloth and repeat this step in each room. You may need to repeat this process several times in a room with a strong musty smell. Cigarette Smell Coming from Neighbor: 3 Ways to Minimize Cigarette Odors
Lots of smokers look for proven ways to get rid of cigarette smells in their home or car. But sometimes non-smokers need to eliminate cigarette odors, too. Such as apartment and condo dwellers who have a neighbor that smokes. Eliminating a neighbor’s second-hand smoke can be tricky. But there are a few easy ways to reduce the cigarette smell in your apartment, condo, townhouse – or even detached home. This article explains how. 1. Stop cigarette smells from entering through your windows Many smokers prefer to smoke outside, such as on their balcony. Or, in bad weather, they’ll sit by an open window and blow the smoke outside. If your balcony door or window is close to that of your neighbour, tobacco odors can easily seep into your apartment this way. Fix: Close all “smoke-entry” windows and doors whenever your neighbor smokes. If you want to air out your apartment, open windows as far from your neighbour’s smoking as possible. This will help prevent tobacco smells from entering your home. 2. Clean the filters on your stove hood, air exchanger or ventilation system Odors can easily seep from one apartment to another – even in buildings that are well insulated. Smoke is especially good at travelling through small holes in walls, plumbing systems and ventilation ducts. If you’ve ever noticed a cigarette smell in your bathroom – or around your range hood, air exchanger or ventilation system – these entry points are probably where the smoke smell is coming from. Fix: Clean the filters with Smoke Odor Neutralizer for Hard Surfaces. This all-purpose cleaner contains an odor neutralizer that specifically targets tobacco odors. If you’re a condo owner, consider sealing any gaps or spaces that cigarette smoke may be seeping through. You can ask your smoking neighbor to do the same in their unit to create a better seal to minimize the spread of cigarette odors. If you’re a tenant, talk to your landlord first. 3. Use an odor neutralizer, not an air freshener If you want to truly remove the smell of cigarettes from the ambient air in your apartment or condo, you need to use an odor neutralizer, not an air freshener. Air fresheners use scents to temporarily mask unwanted odors. In contrast, odor neutralizers bond with and modify the odor-causing molecules so there’s no odor left at all. To eliminate smoke smells from fabrics: Use Smoke Cleaner & Odor Neutralizer for Fabrics & Ambient Air. Simply spray it on clothes, curtains or fabric furniture smelling of tobacco and let the product act. No need to rinse. To eliminate smoke smells in the ambient air in your apartment or condo: If you have a ventilation system or air exchanger system, spray the filter with Smoke Cleaner & Odor Neutralizer for Fabrics & Ambient Air. This is the easiest way to eliminate smoke odors. As the system runs, it will circulate the product throughout your apartment. After this initial treatment, you can simply respray the filters as needed. Don’t have a ventilation system? Spray Smoke Odor Neutralizer for Fabrics & Ambient Air on a clean cloth. Simply hang the cloth over a pedestal fan and run it for an hour or so in every room that smells of tobacco. Pro tip You may need to repeat the process a few times for the product to treat all the air in the room, but don’t worry – it will do the trick. The longer you run the fan, the more the product will spread throughout the room and come into contact with all the nicotine-smelling particles. You can repeat this treatment from time to time whenever you notice the cigarette smell returning. Breathing easy when you have a neighbor who smokes Eliminating a neighbor’s second-hand smoke can be tricky. Air fresheners only layer one smell on top of another, and odor neutralizers need to come into contact the source of the smell to be 100% effective. You may never be able to get rid of your neighbor’s cigarette smell completely, but the above tips will help you keep the smell to a minimum. You’ll be able to breathe easy – until your neighbor finally quits smoking, or you find a new place to live.

Smelly Carpet: The 4 Most Common Odors and How to Remove Them

Here are the four most common carpet odors and how to effectively eliminate them in minutes. To quickly eliminate this odor, we recommend spraying Fabric Smoke Odor Eliminator all over your carpet. This product acts as soon as it touches the source of the bad odor, and in a few minutes, the musty smell will have completely disappeared. If the water has completely soaked through the carpet and it is wet on both sides, you can spray the Fabric Smoke Odor Eliminator on the other side to ensure complete elimination of the musty odor.If you want to clean your musty carpet, you can use Humidity Odor Eliminator. Simply dilute 120 ml of this product in four liters of water and pour it into a carpet cleaning machine. Then clean your carpet and let it dry with a fan. Eliminating cat or dog urine odor from a carpet Your cat or dog gets nervous when you have visitors and has an accident on your entrance mat or living room carpet. Effectively neutralize this bad odor with Urine Odor Eliminator. This product is very effective for urine odors and does not damage fabrics. If your carpet is thin, simply spray the product on the area affected by the urine odor (both sides of the carpet) and let it dry. If you want to clean your carpet, we recommend diluting 4 ounces of Hard, Non-Porous Surface Disinfectant and Pet Odor Eliminator in 4 liters of water and adding this dilution to a carpet cleaning machine. Then clean the carpet and let it dry with a fan.If your carpet is thicker, simply use a small string to draw a circle around the urine area and enlarge it by a few centimeters (the area where the urine is located may have expanded a bit). Then, using a syringe with a needle, inject the Urine Odor Eliminator, starting treatments from the outside of the circle inwards (see diagram below). Inject 3 to 5 ml of product and space each injection about 1 inch apart. Finally, spray the Urine Odor Eliminator on the treated area and let it dry. Neutralizing dog odor If your dog always lies on your carpet and its fur gives off a bad smell, the carpet fibers may absorb this odor and then emit a dog or wet fur smell. To quickly get rid of this bad odor, simply spray Pet Bedding Odor Eliminator all over the fabric and let it work. This product is specifically formulated to eliminate dog odor on carpets, even if the odor has been present for a long time. This product is safe for animals and does not damage fabrics. It is recommended to always test on a small, inconspicuous area and not use on fabrics that may stain in the presence of water. Removing sweat odor During winter, our boots and feet can sometimes give off a sweat odor. By taking off our shoes on the same carpet every day, after a while it can start to smell like sweat. Traveling safely by car with your dog or cat
Car rides can become real nightmares if your pet is not comfortable in the car: anxiety, agitation, barking, vomiting... Not to mention the dangers an animal can pose if it is free to roam as it pleases. Here are some tips to make car travel with Fido and Fluffy go smoothly! Safety on the road with a pet From a legislative standpoint, the Highway Safety Code stipulates that any load in a vehicle (the animal in this case) must be placed so as not to obstruct the driver's view and must not be a source of danger in the event of a potential impact. The animal must therefore be restrained by a safety device. For large dogs, a safety net or barrier can be ideal for separating the front and rear of the car. There are also a multitude of transport crates available in different sizes and formats to suit everyone. Be careful, however, to ensure that the crate is stable/secured. It is also possible to purchase a harness, which can be attached to your vehicle's seat belt, and will prevent your pet from moving around during the trip. Stressed animals in the car? There are solutions! Some dogs are very stressed in the car and will therefore tend to bark, salivate excessively, tremble, and eventually vomit. Here are some tips to avoid these situations, or at least reduce their intensity: Do not feed your dog 2-3 hours before getting in the car, especially if they suffer from motion sickness; Acclimate your dog to car travel from a young age; Try to establish a positive association with the car, for example by taking them to the park or forest, so that they want to go back in the car. They should not associate the car with, for example, a visit to the veterinarian, as they will then be reluctant to get back in the car; Ensure good air circulation and that your pet has safe access to an air source so they can oxygenate and reduce their nausea (if applicable). And if your pet gets sick in the car... If there's nothing you can do, and your dog or cat gets sick every time you go for a drive, take them to a veterinarian who can recommend appropriate medication. To clean up messes made by Fido and Fluffy, Purodora suggests the Hard Surface Disinfectant and Pet Odor Neutralizer for cleaning fabrics, leather, and surfaces, which will also eliminate bad odors. However, if your pet's vomit has penetrated the inside of the seat, we suggest the Urine Odor Neutralizer, an odor neutralizer specifically designed to eliminate urine, vomit, or fecal odors in the car. This product will release a pleasant scent of cleanliness for several hours. Insert the product with a syringe and needle into the seat and spray on carpets to completely neutralize bad odors left by your pet. Can you leave a pet in a parked car? You should never leave your pet alone in the car while you run an errand or two. Even if you leave the windows slightly open, your pet risks suffering from heatstroke, which could be fatal.Indeed, dogs do not regulate their body temperature as easily as humans. The only way they can cool down is by panting. But when dogs pant in the car, they are still breathing hot air. Their body temperature thus rises quickly, even if it is not a heatwave. In 2016, 800 interventions were carried out in Quebec on dogs that had suffered from heatstroke. Irreversible damage to your pet can occur in just thirty minutes. Therefore, avoid leaving your pet alone in the car at all times.

Repainting walls to mask cigarette odor: Is it effective? When you want to eliminate cigarette odor in a house or apartment, it is important not to repaint the walls before treating them. Indeed, bad odor particles are on the walls, and when you apply a coat of paint, it will seal them (because paint is a sealant). Once sealed, the odor becomes impossible to treat and will eventually reappear. It is therefore essential to clean your walls with a good odor neutralizer, namely Smoke Odor Neutralizer for Hard Surfaces, before applying a coat of paint. Can cigarette odor be removed with bleach? The Internet offers various home remedies, including using bleach to remove cigarette odor. Although this household product is effective for all sorts of things, it is not formulated or designed to eliminate nicotine odor particles on walls. After cleaning, you will only smell the strong odor of bleach, but when it dissipates, the tobacco smell will resurface, and it is likely to be even more pronounced than before. To eliminate cigarette odor in the house, should I treat the ventilation system? Cigarette smoke permeates everywhere. It is therefore normal for tobacco odor to be found in places we would not have thought to treat, such as inside walls, the ventilation system, and the ambient air. The odor can even penetrate absorbent materials like wood, plastic, clothes, curtains, and carpets. It is therefore essential, when treating your house for cigarette odor, to wash the ventilation system filters and neutralize the odor in the ambient air by following the correct procedure. How to remove cigarette odor quickly? To achieve the desired results and completely remove cigarette odor, you will need patience, especially when the cigarette odor is strong and has been present for a long time.In the case of cigarette smoke, nicotine particles will permeate various fabrics (carpets, curtains, sofas, clothes, etc.) as well as walls, ceilings, cabinets, etc. The odor also permeates the ventilation system. Therefore, the entire room where the odor originates, and often the entire apartment, must be treated. Patience is required, but don't worry, if you follow all the correct steps to remove cigarette odor in the house, your problem will surely be solved.
