Work boots and shoes: how to care for them and keep them long-lasting?

Taking care of your work shoes and boots is an important factor in their longevity. Taking a few minutes to remove bad odours, to clean them or to store them in an appropriate space helps to keep our work shoes in better condition for longer. Here are a few tips to help you keep your boots or protective shoes looking their best for as long as possible!

A few tips for general boot care

To keep your work shoes in good condition for a long time, it's important to take care of them and maintain them daily. Royer, the manufacturer of safety boots and shoes, shares some important tips on how to keep your work boots and shoes in good condition for a long time to come:

  • Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • To maintain the shoe's grip, remove any encrustations of mud or snow, as well as any gravel or metal parts.
  • Brush your shoes to remove stains and dirt, or use a damp cloth to wash them. But forget soap, because leather doesn't like it!
  • Leave your shoes to dry in a warm, dry, well-ventilated room, away from sources of direct heat such as an electric baseboard heater. Avoid leaving them to dry in the sun.
  • If they're made of leather, apply a quality grease or silicone recommended for leather to waterproof them.
  • If they are made of synthetic fabric, clean them by hand with water and mild soap. The same drying instructions apply as for leather.

How to remove perspiration odors

After a long day's work, you may find that your work boots or shoes smell of perspiration. Forget homemade recipes, deodorizers or enzyme/bacteria-based products. Instead, use an odor neutralizer that will eliminate bad odors on the spot, like Perspiration Odor Neutralizer.

Specifically designed to neutralize the smell of perspiration on fabrics, Perspiration Odor Neutralizer can be used in wet or dry footwear. To remove the bad smell, simply spray the product all over the boots or shoes (don't forget to treat all the way through) and leave to dry naturally. It's important to understand that every time you wear your shoes, you sweat inside them. So the source of the perspiration odor keeps coming back. Ideally, we recommend you spray Sweat Odour Neutralizer every evening when you get home from work, but some people only feel the need to treat every 2-3 days.

Unlike a deodorant that momentarily masks unpleasant odors, or an enzyme/bacteria-based product that only needs to be applied to damp boots, Perspiration Odor Neutralizer eliminates unpleasant odors as soon as it touches the source, right from the first use. What's more, it won't damage fabrics and leaves shoes smelling fresh. Perspiration Odor Neutralizer also removes sweat odors from sports bags, sports equipment, running shoes and winter boots.

Tips for removing damp smell from boots

When it rains, water can seep into our boots, giving them a bad smell.

To eliminate damp odors, we recommend the use of Smoke Odor Neutralizer for Fabrics and Ambient Air. This product is a highly effective odor neutralizer for removing damp or musty odors from fabrics. Simply spray it into boots or shoes that give off an unpleasant odor, and leave it to work. It's important to spray Smoke Odour Neutralizer for Fabrics all the way to the bottom of the shoe, so that the product reaches the entire source of the odour. As soon as it's applied, the product eliminates the odor, rather than masking it as a deodorant would. What's more, because Smoke Odor Neutralizer for Fabrics is alcohol-based (the same type of alcohol found in perfumes), it dries very quickly and won't stain fabric.
